Finding Balance: The Key to your Healthy Lifestyle (interview)

Jordana Hart is an amazing part of our community. As a loud voice in our world of health and nutrition, Jordana touts a realistic, reasonable, and forgiving approach to leading a healthy lifestyle. We love following her on Instagram and checking out her many adventures in Toronto and beyond, so we reached out to ask her a few questions about her nutritionist philosophy and how she got to where she is today.

Michelle’s RawFoodz: Tell us about yourself. Why do you do what you do, and why do you love it?

Jordana Hart: My name is Jordana Hart, and I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and wellness expert. I run a fast-growing health, nutrition and wellness blog called IHARTNUTRITION.

For as long as I can remember, I have been in love with food and cooking. Living an active and healthy lifestyle was always important to me, but it was not until about 6 years ago that I decided to turn my passion into my full-blown career. I went back to school and become a Holistic Nutritionist and decided that my goal will be to nourish my body and those around me with amazing quality ingredients, while staying balanced and enjoying food.

MRF: One of your main messages is balance – live a balanced lifestyle and don’t deprive yourself of the things you love. Tell us why our guilty pleasure has a place in a healthy lifestyle

JH: To me a balanced lifestyle even includes the “unhealthy” food! Food is just one part of the equation of being “healthy”. A healthy life also includes having a social life, and being able to go with the flow without experiencing food guilt. Once you say a food is “off limits” it is more likely that you will crave that food and feel deprived. Thankfully our bodies are very powerful and are equipped to handle indulgent meals once in a while! If you are living a healthy lifestyle, chances are you will have less cravings for the “bad” foods anyways.

MRF: We love that. There are so many factors that contribute to a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and diet is just one of them!

On your website, you have a list of rules (which we love). One of those rules outlines the importance of cooking for yourself. Why is it important that we all know how to make a few staples at home?

JH: Home-cooked meals are always much healthier than going out for a meal. When you cook something on your own you get to know exactly what is going into your food and control portions. It’s important that we all have some staples to turn to avoid relying on restaurant meals which often lack nutrients, and are full of sugar and sodium. When we cook on our own we have the advantage of creating healthy versions of the foods we love!

MRF: Agreed! We’re all about convenience at Michelle’s RawFoodz. We know that leading a healthy lifestyle may take some extra prep time (which is one of the main reasons Michelle created RawFoodz). Do you have any time-saving tips for people who want to eat healthy but don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen?

JH: I would recommend finding 1 day a week (Sundays are great!) to plan and prepare some basic foods to enjoy during the week. Chop up veggies ahead of time to snack on or add to salads or prepare some proteins to have on hand so you don’t have to cook when you get home from a long day!

MRF: And finally, we know that the word nutrition might not be the most appealing word to some people because they think it means cutting out the foods they love most, but tell us why people should HART nutrition?

JH: HART(ing) nutrition is all about feeling amazing and having a fabulous relationship with food. Nutrition can get a bad rap because people think it means being super clean or strict with food. To me, nutrition merely means fueling your body with delicious and nutritious ingredients to help you look and feel your best.

What a great way to end our chat. Thank you so much, Jordana!
